Nurturing the Next Generation
There is a growing concern about the lack of young talent available for shop-floor jobs. While the number of engineers continues to rise, there is a noticeable shortage of technicians.
Seats in ITI (Industrial Training Institute) courses, particularly for roles requiring physical labor, remain unfilled. Many individuals prefer to pursue engineering or other courses that do not involve manual work. This trend raises an important question: is this sustainable for the future? Over time, a significant shortage of skilled technicians and workers across various trades seems inevitable.
This situation is alarming and demands urgent attention. To ensure the survival and growth of production-based industries, we need to address the looming labor shortage. Without adequate manpower, production industries will struggle to sustain themselves.
One potential solution is for industries, especially public sector undertakings (PSUs), to implement a structured system. Under this system, ITI graduates should be employed by industries for a minimum of three years after completing their apprenticeships, with fair and competitive salaries. A dedicated body, such as KPSERB, could oversee the interview and placement process to create a pool of skilled workers that industries can access based on their needs.
This approach would not only strengthen the ITI education system but also ensure a steady supply of skilled workers for industries in Kerala.
Additionally, organizations could consider offering customized training programs tailored to their specific needs. These courses would help create a pipeline of qualified manpower, benefiting both the hosting industries and others in need of skilled workers.
By taking proactive steps today, we can secure a stable and skilled workforce for the future and safeguard the sustainability of production industries.
